Player going strong at 80

As we approach the Emirates Australian Open, one of its most revered and loved champions celebrates a special day.

On November 1, 1935, Gary Player was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

To celebrate the 80th birthday of the man who holds the record for the most Emirates Australian Open victories – his seven surpasses Jack Nicklaus’ six and Greg Norman’s five – we thank and recall 80 facts about one of the greatest players to have graced a fairway.

Player, known to many as “The Black Knight”, is said to have logged more travel kilometres than any athlete – in any sport – of all time, and continues to enhance his reputation as the global ambassador by attending as many events and tournaments as possible each year.

And yes, if you’re wondering, he still plays superbly having “broken his age” many times.

Check out this remarkable career at and keep in mind his 1968 and ’69 “Australian Masters” victories were the now defunct “Wills Masters”.

Happy birthday, Mr Player – a gentleman and a legend!
