Players & Guests Celebrate WGNR’s 80th Anniversary

Over 100 players took part each day in the July three day tournament to mark 80 years since the district association was formed in 1932. It all began in Lismore and therefore the Lismore Golf Club became the ideal place to hold the tournament. Players from 16 of the 18 affiliated clubs in the district, plus visitors from other districts competed. Sue Reguson (Coolangatta-Tweed Heads) won the WGNR championship which was played over 36 holes. Sheridan Gorton from Murwillumbah (a junior) won the Champions of Champions-18 holes is played in conjunction with the second days event; and to be eligible you had to have been your club s latest champion. On the third day Marilyn Druitt from Ballina and Val Davidson from Tenterfield won the Foursomes Championship. About 113 women attended the anniversary dinner on Tuesday night at the Lismore Workers Club. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves and reminisced about the past and took home the souvenir placement mats which garnished the dinner table. WGNR President Patsy Jessup was in fine form during the evening and welcomed everyone. She commented that it was a most successful celebration! Special guests were invited including past presidents and members of the 1982 Silver Anniversary Committee. Irene Fuller (Life Member) who is 92 came down from Queensland and cut the special Anniversary cake. Ball markers with the new Women’s Golf Northern Rivers logo were given to the tournament players and the dinner guests. The WGNR was pleased to have Sue Fabian from Golf NSW participate in the tournament and attend the dinner. A DVD of historical photographs of the 18 clubs, compiled by Joy Slater was shown during the tournament and dinner. A 70 page anniversary book has been published, containing results from 1932 until the present day with a historical account of the clubs in the district. These are available through Robyne Trotter, the WGNR Secretary at womensgolfnr@gmail.com for $10.00.
