The urgent nature of the Interstate Series will be rammed home first thing today with host Queensland pitted against New South Wales in two crucial opening matches.

The traditional rivals square off in both men’s and women’s divisions with the winners likely to get a big leg-up on the field  on a beautiful, still morning in Brisbane.

In particular, the women’s teams must hit the ground running with just five rounds before the final at Royal Queensland on Thursday afternoon.

Home team Queensland will look to its depth of talent to see off the Blues, with four of the five Queenslanders having represented Australia in the past 18 months and Riversdale Cup champion Kirsty Hodgkins, likely to play at No.4, in good form, too.

But New South Wales will be no pushover with Liz Elmassian and Celina Yuan packing a hefty punch at 1-2 in the line-up.

In other opening women’s matches, Tasmania faces South Australia, while Victoria and Western Australia clash in another match likely to shape the finals make-up.

At Brisbane Golf Club, the men’s matches feature two big shakedowns with the Maroons and Blues going at it, while the in-form South Australians will put their title credentials on the line against the highly fancied West Australians.

Tasmania plays Victoria in the other opening match, while Northern Territory begins with a bye.
