The Golf SA Women's A1 Pennant, now known as the ‘Sanderson Cup’ will commence on Sunday 22nd May, with Blackwood Golf Club hosting the first round of matches.
The ‘Sanderson Cup’ title, is in honour of Pauline Sanderson, who was a noted player and administrator and a member and pennant player for both Glenelg and Kooyonga Golf Clubs, where she won numerous titles.
After being a six team competition since the formation of Golf SA, the 2016 Sanderson Cup is from this season, a four team competition (The Grange, Glenelg, Blackwood and Kooyonga), with five players per team. Each team plays each other twice with the top two teams after the six minor round matches playing off in the final at Royal Adelaide on Sunday 10 July to decide the premier. The bottom side will be relegated.
2015 premier The Grange who have a youthful squad are well position to be a contender again this year and beyond. After their breakthrough win last season, their first title since 2004, they should be confident of the season ahead and could go back to back.
The Grange Team Manager Kristine Tapp believes the team will be right in the mix again.
“The Grange Golf Club Women’s A1 Team once again has a very impressive line-up of players for the 2016 season. Three of the six players have competed in the Interstate Women’s Series in Queensland with Cassidy Evreniadis nominated as Team Captain. All players in this year’s team have excelled throughout the year competing in various tournaments and concentration on golfing skills has been paramount. Wei-Jean Foo as Team Captain brings a mature leadership and as always the commitment to The Grange Golf Club will ensure a season of very fair and competitive golf.“ Kristine Tapp said
Glenelg has lost some strong players, especially number one player Jenny Lee who has turned professional. Lee was unavailable for last year’s final which opened the door for The Grange. It’s very hard to replace dominate number one players, but when one door closes another opens and Glenelg Team Manager Cathy Johnson is looking forward to the season ahead.
“With the move of the A2 Fiona Pike Cup to Sunday and the loss of four of our 2015 squad, GGC are excited about the new faces in our A1 Sanderson Cup Pennant squad. Four players are current state senior and/or junior members and three others have past state experience. We look forward to a competitive season with Golf SA’s new format.” Cathy Johnson said
