Prodigy ends Shellback’s run

Australia's run at the New Zealand Amateur Championship came to an end today in the face of an extraordinary achievement in Christchurch.

Louis Dobbelaar bowed out in the quarter-finals of the men's title in the morning, but Jade Shellback kept the flag flying with an impressive 2&1 victory over Caryn Khoo in the women's section at Russley Golf Club.

But Shellback's magical run to the final four would end just there at the hands of a 14-year-old prodigy.

Auckland's Silvia Brunotti spotted Shellback an early lead in their semi-final, but ran down her opponent 5&4 as the Victorian-based Queenslander made three back-nine bogeys to end her impressive week.

Brunotti will face defending champ Rose Zheng in tomorrow's final with the aim of becoming the event's second youngest champion behind long-time world No.1 Lydia Ko.

The men's final will be contested by Tom Parker and Daniel Hillier.

Dobbelaar, who had won an extraordinary seven matches in a row at this event dating back to last year's title run, just couldn't make inroads on Hayato Miya, eventually falling 4&3.
