Qualifiers breeze through at Sanctuary Lakes

It was a shock change in climate today for players at the Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship qualifying round at the Sanctuary Lakes Club. 27 pairs, made up of 23 men’s and 4 mixed, pulled out the rain gear as temperatures halved from the blistering heat wave that swept through the state yesterday.

The men’s event saw a bottleneck of scores, with count-backs needed to determine the prize winners. Derek MacCallum & Ian Proudfoot from Elsternwick narrowly took out Eastern’s Adam Krezel and 2015 Mazda2 hole-in-one winner Vic Garbacz to secure a spot in the State Final. The pairs tied on 44 points, with MacCallum and Proudfoot taking out the count-back. Third place was won on another count-back by John Steny & Steven Warr of Amstel on 43 points.

Local knowledge proved to be an advantage for the Sanctuary Lakes pair of Stuart and Jayne Todd, taking out the mixed section with 42 points. Kevin Dorney (Woodend) & Val Chard (Riversdie) and Charlie Urek and Hing Lin Au or Sunshine finished runner-up and third place respectively.

Special mention to Paul Zele and his team at Werribee Mazda for supporting the day. The next qualifying rounds will be held at Spring Valley tomorrow and Horsham on Sunday 17 January.
