Queensland Indigenous Championships

The Queensland Golf Union has announced that it will hold the inaugural Queensland Indigenous Championships at Murgon Golf Club from 23-25 March. Open to both male and female Indigenous amateur golfers, the event will be held at Murgon Golf Club, about three hours drive north of Brisbane. The event has been in planning for the last couple of years and the QGU is very pleased that the event will finally come to fruition, with excellent support from the Queensland Government via Sport and Recreation. Aimed at increasing participation in the Indigenous Community as well as identifying the best Indigenous golfers, the event is sure to be a success with the first two events (2007 and 2008) confirmed at Murgon. With the Championship taking place over 54 holes, the QGU and the Murgon Golf Club will also host a Welcome Ceremony for the players on Thursday 22nd March at 6:00pm with a Local Elder to officially open the Championship. The event will then conclude on Sunday 25th with a Championship dinner including the official presentation of trophies. Further information is available at the Queensland Golf Union website. The Queensland Championship is a further example of the increasing cooperation between the golf industry and the Indigenous community. Golf Australia has recently announced its formal endorsement of the National Indigenous Golf Championships to be played this year in Alice Springs. As well as providing support for the championship, Golf Australia also provides an exemption for the winner of the Indigenous event into the Australian Amateur Stroke Play Championship. Shaun Nannup, the winner of the 2006 Indigenous Championship at the Growling Frog Golf Course in Victoria, is the first recipient of this exemption, being offered entry into the 2007 Stroke Play Championship at New South Wales Golf Club in March.
