Thank you to Virginia Golf Club for their hospitality, with the course proving challenging as the winds increased throughout the morning.

The 2017 Queensland Men’s Country Week has opened with a cracking start at Redcliffe Golf Club for the 36-hole stroke play event on Monday and Tuesday.

Scott Warren (Gin Gin) produced rounds of 70-72 to claim his third consecutive crown in spectacular fashion. Despite a slightly shaky start in his opening nine in round one, an eagle on the par-4 14th lifted his spirits, with his consistency across the two days paying dividends.

“I struck the ball well on Monday but putted bad. And today didn’t hit the ball so good, but putted better, and similar score. It’s always a pleasure to come and play, and luckily enough I came away with the win,” Warren said.

Not far off the pace was 2014 Men’s Country Champion Adam Gemmell (Ipswich) winning on a countback to Wade Edwards for runner-up, after rounds of 74-69.

A friendly rivalry has sparked between Warren and Gemmell over the years, each holding the Men’s Country Week title over the past few years.

“It’s always good to play with Adam and going head to head. He has had a few wins over me in the past and it’s good to sneak up on him every now and again. We have a good friendship going on, always a pleasure playing with him,” Warren said.

Players will next head to Redcliffe Golf Club for the Foursomes event on Thursday, followed by the Fourball at Virginia Golf Club on Friday.
