Rasmussen and Fernando take out Southern titles
The final round to this year’s Southern Junior Classic was contested this morning in ideal golfing conditions. With a number of players within striking distance of the round one frontrunners the day was set to be an exciting finish.
In the boys section, Jack Rasmussen took a three shot advantage into today’s round as Jasper Stubbs and Kasey Cathcart looked to apply the pressure and reduce the overnight deficit. However Rasmussen was rock solid all day, signing for a level par 72 to capture victory in the first 2016 SAJG tournament at -3.
Although Jasper Stubbs had a late barrage of birdies for a two under-par round of 70, he would fall just two shots of the eventual winner but claim honours in the U14 boys section. Also notable was Harrison Whykes who shot two under today to be placed third.
After holding the round one lead by two shots, Shanaiah Fernando had a solid round of one under-par 73 to take outh the girls Southen Junior Classic title. Fernando has been in some stellar form of late after notching up a victory at the SAJG Signaure Tournament back in Novemeber last year.
Cobram Barooga’s Steffanie Vogel was Fernando nearest challenger following rounds of 78 and 74 for a tournament tally of 152.
There was some unbelievable scores in the overall handicap section but Sothern’s very own Lachlan Robinson claiming the top honours after handing in a round of 63 today to sit nicely beside his 64 and to beat his handicap by a massive 17 shots!

Rasmussen and Fernando poised at the top of the leaderboard
The first SAJG tournament for 2016 commenced this morning at the fantastic Southern Golf Club. A strong field assembled on the perfectly manicured fairways in ideal scoring conditions early on with calm winds and mild temperatures. A gusty breeze gathered momentum around midday and made the going a little tricky for those teeing off later in the morning.
It was a fantastic day for Jack Rasmussen who carded a round of three under-par to lead the boys section. Jack started a little slow on the front nine turning in one over 37 but came home with a bang thanks to three birdies and an eagle on the back side for his 69. Both Kasey Cathcart and 14 year old Jasper Stubbs carded rounds of 73 to be tied in second position.
Shanaiah Fernando has a grip in the girl’s gross section as she cruised to a round of 76, or two over-par. Raphaella Mugano, Steffanie Vogel and Linley Ooi are marginally behind the Yarra Yarra member after the trio signed for 78 to be placed two shots adrift and well within distance to capture victory.
In the overall nett section, Mitchell McCombe used all of his local knowledge to his advantage and seamlessly played his way to a stellar round of 64 to break his handicap by a massive eight strokes. However he wasn’t alone today, Lachlan Robinson came in late and matched Mitchells score of 64 for a share of the lead.
The second and final round will commence at 8:00am with a shotgun start.
