Rawlings emerges as Northern Amateur Champion

Riverside Golf Club’s Sam Rawlings emerged from a quality field to secure the Northern Amateur title at Country Club Tasmania last weekend. The current State team member held off an impressive and challenging field with scores of 78 and 70, a six-over-par total of 148. Rawlings won the Toogood Trophy event by one stroke from Launceston s Cameron Bell and Mowbray s John Cassidy who finished with a seven-over-par totals of 149. Local member Richard Deverell and Smithton junior Ben Elliott placed fifth and sixth with totals of 150 (+8) and 151 (+9) respectively. 16-year-old Elliott claimed the Northern Tasmanian Junior Championship held in conjunction with the event. The four handicapper won the event by eight strokes from 16-year-old Tasmania Golf Club member Luke Gilbert. Elliott carded rounds of 75 and 76 around the Prospect Vale course to take out the Athol Shephard Consistency event. Gilbert opened the tournament with a round of 79 and followed it up with a nine-over-par round of 80 to finish with a total of 159 (+17). Local and State boy s team member Jack Tregaskisjago placed outright third on 160 (+18). The next State junior selection event on the calendar is the Tamar Valley Junior Cup being conducted at the Greens Beach Golf Club from January 20-22. The Tasmanian Junior Masters at Tasmania Golf Club will be conducted in the same week from January 24-25.
