Women’s A Pennant has been remodelled this season to comprise three grades A1 (Pauline Sanderson Cup) & A2 (Fiona Pike Cup) to be played on Sunday and Women’s A3 (Pool A & B) to be played on Monday.
After being a six team competition since the formation of Golf SA, the 2016 Sanderson Cup is from this season, a four team competition. Teams competing are The Grange, Glenelg, Blackwood and Kooyonga, with five players per team.
Each team plays each other twice with the top two teams after the six minor round matches playing off in the final at Royal Adelaide on Sunday 10 July to decide the premier. The bottom side will be relegated.
In round one, of the ‘Sanderson Cup’ played at Blackwood, both The Grange and Kooyonga enjoyed a winning start to the season.
In an ominous sign for other teams it was a 5-0 win to last season’s champion The Grange against home side Blackwood.
Grange’s top three players, state players Ella Adams 4&2, Jin-young Yun 6&4, Cassidy Evreniadis 3&2 all had solid wins while Caitlin Roberts 4&3, and Jean Foo 3&2 both won well against Angela Masters and Paula White respectively.
In their match, Kooyonga produced a huge effort first up defeating Glenelg 3.5-1.5.
Jodie Deacon hit the scoreboard first for Kooyonga, defeating Charley Jacobs 1up in a tight tussle, but Sarah Crocker, who is in fine form after a solid Women’s Interstate Series, hit back defeating SA Mid-Amateur Champion Deb Percey 3&2.
Kooyonga went 2-1 ahead when Lisa Brien defeated Sam White 5&3 and then in an impressive display at number one, Lyn McGough defeated Elysia Yap 4&3 to give Kooyonga the vital third match.
The number two match between Jill Hodge and Hayley Hunt was halved, closing out the contest 3.5-1.5 in Kooyonga’s favour.
