Rd 2 Pennant Wrap – Mens A1 Simpson Cup

Glenelg and Blackwood sit at the top of the Simpson Cup table as the only undefeated teams after two rounds, while Tea Tree Gully and Southern are yet to secure points.

In the first contest of the day, the home side grinded early to set up its victory over Tea Tree Gully and for a second consecutive week, Blackwood’s bottom four players all recorded victories.

Ben Tobin 1up, Mathew Monsma 2&1, Daniel Wake 2&1 and Michael Munn 6&4 were rock solid yet again to secure victory early for the home side.

Sam Burton, Nick May and Chris Austin won in the first three positions for Tea Tree Gully, but it was all too late with Blackwood winning the contest 4-3.

It was a boil over in the second contest of the day with The Vines defeating Kooyonga 4-3.

The Vines held a 3 – 0 lead with early wins to Paul Gregory 2up, Brendan Fisher 3&2, and Matthew Bell 1up, before Kooyonga mounted a comeback courtesy of middle order players, Kyle Hayter 4&3, Sam Inglis 4&3 and Joe Hodgson 7&6.

The hero for The Vines was Craig Rivett at number one against state top order player Will Somerfield. Rivett rebounded from a heavy loss to Billy Cawthorne in round one to defeat Somerfield 4&3 and secure the contest for The Vines.

Glenelg continued on its winning way defeating Southern 5-2 to remain at the top of the table.

The contest was tight early with a win to Southern’s Brad Altmann at number six 4&3 over Brodie Whitbread, before Andy Humphries won for Glenelg at number five 6&5.

Match seven between Ben Hallam and Simon Connelly was halved, before Glenelg edged ahead with wins to Jackson Kalz 4&3 and Ben Layton over Jared Thoman 8&6.

Anthony Olsen halved at number three, against Southern skipper Chad Methven, but a win was needed and when Sam Earl notched up a win over Chris Burns 3&2 Glenelg proved too strong winning 5-2.

In the contest of the round The Grange squared with Royal Adelaide 3.5-3.5.

The Grange secured 2.5 points from the first three matches courtesy of wins to Colin Coleman 2&1 over Nathan Baulderstone and Scott Webb 4&3 over Josh Groom. Mark Demasi and Matt Lawson squared their match at number six.

Sam Medlin hit back for Royal Adelaide winning 4&3 against Alex Hendrick, however when Jack Thompson won 2&1 against Will Arnold, Grange were in the box seat to win outright.

Enter Royal Adelaide duo Patric Kroschel 2&1 and Billy Cawthorne 3&1. Both players stood up for a second week in a row winning the all-important final two matches to claim a vital halve contest for Royal.

Next week’s round three matches are held at The Grange Golf Club with the host side doing battle against Glenelg. In other matches, Tea Tree Gully come up against Kooyonga, Southern play The Vines and Royal Adelaide are up against Blackwood.
