Winners in round five of the Simpson Cup played at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club were; Kooyonga, Glenelg, The Grange, and the home side who notched up their first win of the season to move from eighth to sixth on the ladder.
Glenelg remain top of the table with a half a point buffer from Kooyonga, while The Grange has moved into outright third and a chance to finish top two, but only if Kooyonga drop both of their final two matches.
In the first match of the day, Tea Tree Gully made the most of their home course knowledge to defeated Blackwood 7-0.
The ever reliable Norm Cordina, in his first match of the season, was the most comprehensive winner 4&3 at number six, while Jake Calvert, Zak Amundson, Jake Hurst and Nick May all won 3&2. Jacin Cook defeated David Clough 2up while Matt McMahon won 1up at the number one match against Daniel Wake.
Kooyonga bounced back from its halve last round with The Vines to defeat Southern 6-1. While the score line appears Kooyonga had it their own way, Southern pushed the 2015 premiers all the way with four matches going the distance, but Kooyonga prevailing in all.
Winner 1up were Daniel Speirs, Will Somerfield and Joe Hodgson, while Tim Baker won 2up recording his fifth win for the season. Other winners for Kooyonga were Kyle Hayter 6&5 and Sam Inglis 3&2. Jak Carter was the sole winner for Southern 5&3 over Rd 4 player of the week, Heath Riches.
Glenelg continued on its winning way, defeating Thaxted Park 6.5-0.5. Remarkably Glenelg has only dropped three individual matches and had two halves in the first five rounds. Sam Earl 4&2 and Anthony Olsen 5&4 both winners, have now notched up 5 wins in a row.
It was a tight tussle between The Grange and The Vines with the overall contest coming down to the final match between number one Matthew Lisk and Alex Curtin. With the contest deadlocked at 3-3 with The Vines winners being, Corey Apthorpe 2&1, Michael Bruggeman 2&1 and Tony Nobbs 6&5 and The Grange wins’ courtesy of Alex Hendrick 6&5, Colin Coleman 3&2 and Jack Thompson 5&4, a win for both teams was vital to increase their chances to finish top two.
In the end, it was Grange Team Captain Matthew Lisk who proved too steady for Curtin, winning 2up and securing the win for his side 4-3.
Next week’s round six matches are held at Thaxted Park with the home facing Tea Tree Gully. In a must win game, The Grange play Blackwood, while in the battle of the South, The Vines take on Southern District. In the match of the round and perhaps a prelude to the Grange Final, Glenelg play Kooyonga.
