Rd 5 Pennant Wrap – Mens A1 Simpson Cup

Winners in round five of the Simpson Cup played at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club were; the home side, Kooyonga, The Grange and Glenelg.

Glenelg now extends its lead and moves two games clear at the top of the table guaranteeing a finals berth, while five teams remain in the chase to finish second.

In the first match of the day off the 1st tee, Tea Tree Gully convincingly defeated Southern 6.5-0.5 to record its second win in a row.

Scott Johnstone got TTG off to a flyer, defeating Simon Connelly 6&5 before Zak Amundson and Brad Altmann squared the number six match.

Tight wins followed for TTG, with Jacin Cook 2up, Nick May 2up, Matt McMahon 3&1 and Sam Burton 1up, before Chris Austin won at number one 5&3 against Andrew Stoodley.

In the other early match off the 10th tee, the contest could have gone either way with a number of tight matches, but Kooyonga in the end defeated Royal Adelaide 5-2.

Halved matches for the day were between Kooyonga’s Geoff Brennan and Matt Lawson and Kyle Hayter and Nathan Baulderstone.

Royal’s lone winner was Patric Kroschel 3&2 over Joe Hodgson, while Kooyonga’s four outright wins were to Broden McMillen and Will Somerfield both 3&2, and Sam Inglis and Heath Riches 1up.

The Grange secured its second win in a row with a 5-2 win over The Vines.

In another tight contest, with a number of close matches, Granges bottom order were all solid securing victories. Colin Coleman won 1up, Mark Demasi 2&1 and Scott Webb 4&3.

When Matthew Bell halved with Alex Hendrick at number four and Corey Apthorpe defeated Jack Thompson 1up The Vines were still in the contest until the talented Liam Georgiadis defeated Tony Nobbs 3&1 to secure the win for The Grange.

At number one The Vines Craig Rivett halved with Justin Crowder which at the pointed end of the season could prove valuable with The Vines fighting to avoid relegation.

Whilst The Grange currently sit fourth with two wins and a halve, the two matches they have lost were by the narrowest of margins 4-3 to both Kooyonga and Glenelg. It wouldn’t surprise if The Grange won their final two matches and with a bit of luck, jumped up into the final.

Blackwood almost pulled off a stunning win over Glenelg but the league leaders proved too strong winning 4-3.

Ben Hallam 4&2 and Jackson Kalz 6&5 both won early for Glenelg before Daniel Wake defeated Josh Hayes 4&3. After Anthony Olsen and Mathew Monsma halved Glenelg held a 2.5-1.5 lead.

With the number three match between Ben Layton and Michael Munn going the distance, next in was Sam Earl for Glenelg 5&4 over Ben Winton. When the previous match finally finished square, Glenelg had secured 4 matches and the contest.

Despite this, Blackwood’s number one Nick Wake fought hard to defeated Lachlan Barker 1up.

Next week’s round six matches are held at The Vines with the host side coming up against Blackwood. Southern play Royal Adelaide in a do or die contest, The Grange do battle with Tea Tree Gully and in the match of the day Kooyonga play Glenelg to close out the round.
