Glenelg has secured the minor premiership with one round to play in the Simpson Cup and will be the only team with ‘nothing to play for’ apart from form, in the final round.
Either second placed The Grange or third team Thaxted Park, will face Glenelg in the final after both teams had comfortable wins in round six and remarkably, with one round to play, any of the five teams placed from fourth to eighth could be relegated.
In a wrap of round six at Tea Tree Gully, Thaxted Park kept its finals hunt alive defeating the home side 4.5-2.5 with Liddell 4&2, Rolton 5&4, Hey 2up, and Roxby 2up all winners.
The Grange were too strong for Southern 6.5-0.5 with their six wins courtesy of Demasi 6&4, Nick Thompson 4&2, Marshall 5&4, Coleman 7&6, Georgiadis 2&1 and Jack Thompson 4&3.
Kooyonga had an important win over The Vines 5-2 to sit fourth on the ladder and are the team least likely to drop too many places. The five winners for Kooyonga on the weekend were Brennan 2up, Salamon 6&5, Deutrom 5&4, Riches 2up and Bishop 3&1.
Glenelg had a close contest with Royal Adelaide but prevailed 4-3. Munn 6&4, Tanner 5&3, Buchanan 1up and Josh Hayes 5&3 were all winners.
The final round of matches will be played at Mount Compass. Glenelg will play ‘home side’ Southern who need to win at least a couple of matches to remain mid-table. The Vines versus Tea Tree Gully is the crucial contest. If TTG wins, The Vines will be relegated, but if The Vines win any of the four teams currently above it could be in trouble.
If The Grange can defeat Royal Adelaide 5-2 or better it will make the final while Royal Adelaide will need to win as many matches it can in case The Vines win.
Thaxted Park plays Kooyonga and have to win big or if Royal just defeats The Grange, Thaxted Park are through and can start to dream of winning a fifth Simpson Cup.
