Media Release: Friday 6 June 2014
A record number of school students are set to participate in this year’s NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge, embracing the importance of having an active lifestyle.
NSW Premier Mike Baird today joined Menai MP Melanie Gibbons to launch the 2014 Premier’s Sporting Challenge at Chipping Norton Public School.
Some of this year’s ambassadors were also in attendance, including former NRL star Joe Galuvao, Australian netballer Susan Pratley, and Paralympic Rower Erik Horrie.
“The challenge is all about introducing our school-aged children to the habit of regular exercise, which is a habit we hope they carry through to their adult lives,” Mr Baird said.
“Students are asked to log any physical activity they undertake over a 10 week period, whether it’s playing soccer or netball in the playground, organised sport on weekends, riding a bike or going for a bushwalk.
“I hope all students can realise for themselves that playing sport or exercising is fun, promotes teamwork, is good for their health and improves learning in the classroom.
“I’m delighted to see a record almost 300,000 students have already signed up for this year’s challenge from 1,270 schools – including 86 schools participating for the first time.
“We’re lucky to have a great team of ambassadors who will visit schools and share their own inspirational stories and explain why having a healthy lifestyle is so important if you want to be at your best.”
Ms Gibbons wished all students at Chipping Norton Public School well for this year’s challenge.
“I’m delighted Chipping Norton Public School has participated every year since 2009, making the challenge a part of their school events calendar every year,” Ms Gibbons said.
“I look forward to seeing some inspirational results,” she said.
The Premier’s Sporting Challenge is funded by the NSW Government in partnership with NRL One Community, Sydney Markets Fresh for Kids and Teachers Mutual Bank.
