In typically fine dry season weather, Justin Maker of the Virginia GC in Queensland won the 2005 Mitsubishi Volvo Suzuki Amateur Open Championship with an eight under par 280. His win followed a win in the NT Foursomes Championship on 24 May 2005 with Aaron Pike from the Indooroopilly GC. Maker was quoted in the Northern Territory News as saying that, while he would like to return to defend his title at next year s NT Championship to be held in Alice Springs, he hoped to turn pro at the end of this year. Runner-up to Maker and some nine shots back was Mitchell Brown from NSW. He had just returned from the Four Nation Cup tournament in Japan where he was a member of the unbeaten Australian team. Perhaps the surprise of the tournament was the performance rising-star junior, Mitchell Thomason. At just 16 years of age, he finished with a very creditable score of 297. Thomason s good performance won him two titles – the NT Closed Amateur Championship and the NT Junior Open Championship titles. He also won the A Grade nett with a score of 273 to win from Maker by just one shot. Interestingly, Thomason s grandfather, Norm Watson, was fourth in the NT Senior Championship.
