Rhodes and Pascoe win SA Senior Amateur Championship

The South Australian Men’s and Women’s Senior Amateur Championships has been won by Victorian Greg Rhodes from Coomealla Golf Club, while Helen Pascoe from Buninyong Golf Club in Victoria has claimed the Women’s Senior Championship.

The Championship attracted 79 entrants with 42 players travelling from interstate.

Loxton Golf Club in SA's Riverland District hosted the event, which saw players competing over 54 holes on a course ranked among the top 100 Australian country courses.

Rhodes finished the 54 hole tournament as one of only three players to break 80 in each round after posting scores of 79, 78, 76. Rhodes birdied the last hole to force a playoff with Geoff Charnley (Rossdale GC) 83, 72, 76.

After coming off a win last week at The Grange and Kooyonga Seniors event, Rhodes proved too strong to defeat Charnley on the first playoff hole with a birdie.

Day one saw SA’s Norm Cordina hold the lead after posting a round of 76 with Bruce Lindner from Kooyonga one shot further back.

Day two saw Charnley post the low round of the tournament with a 72, holding a one shot lead over John Kelly and two shot lead over Rhodes, Davey, Hallam and Lindner.

However, a final round 76 by Rhodes, the best of the day, was crucial to forcing the playoff and edging him to the title after a runner up finish in 2017.

In the women’s championship five SA players were joined by four Victorians, two players from WA and Lyn Banks from Scone GC in NSW.

Pascoe the low marker off 1.2 was too strong for the field posting rounds of 76, 80, 84 to win the championship by 15 stroked ahead of Lyn Bennett from Gosnells GC in WA.
