The pinnacle event in Australian men’s senior golf, the Australian Men's Senior Amateur, has begun at the Royal Hobart Golf Club.
And there is already a familiar face on top at Seven Mile Beach.
Coomealla Golf Club member Greg Rhodes, the 2015 champion and third again last year, leads the field by one stroke with an even-par opening round of 72.
The 58-year-old Victorian carded four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys in breezy and overcast conditions.
Lester Peterson, from Bardwell Valley Golf Club in New South Wales, and multiple champion New Zealand’s Michael Barltrop are one stroke adrift of Rhodes on one-over 73.
Russell Rogers, from Tura Beach Country Club in New South Wales, and Brad Dowling, from Southport Golf Club in Queensland, round out the top five on two-over-par 74.
Local member, Peter Shaw, is the leading Tasmanian in equal sixth place on three-over-par 75.
In the Interstate Teams event, Victoria has taken an early lead, but the consistent West Australian team is only seven strokes behind with plenty of golf to go.
