Richard Green claims Men’s Oates Vic Open Championship

Victorian Richard Green has capped off a week to remember by securing his first Oates Victorian Open title joining his victorious Norwegian fiancée Marianne Skarpnord in festivities.

A former Australian Masters champion himself, Green finished tied on 16-under par with recent Australian Masters Nick Cullen from South Australia.

Though Green recorded seven birdies and only two bogeys he would have to wait two playoff holes before he was able to claim the trophy, finishing after a total playing time of six hours and 25 minutes.

“It’s one of those tournaments I’ve wanted on my list and more so than some places around the world so it’s always been important to me,” said Green.

He added, “It’s never going to be easy winning and its hard work but it’s amazing now that I’ve done it.”
Victorian amateurs Ben Eccles, 20, and Ryan Ruffles, 16, tied for third with previous winner Scott Arnold (14-under par) while 2004 Vic Open winner Gareth Paddison (New Zealand) finished tied for sixth.

“I’d like to think that I’m not the old stalwart but I probably am in the field so it’s good for the young guys to have a role model,” said Green.

“I remember playing in the Victorian Open against Ian Stanley before I even turned pro and I was close then and threatened to have a win, and the tough pros came through and beat me.”

Green, alongside Skarpnord purchased property at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links recently before recording an incredible hole-in-one albatross that was seen around the world during Wednesday’s Pro-Am.

The 43 year old is already looking forward to commencing his tilt at back-to-back titles.

“There’s been a period of times when I haven’t been able to come back due to euro tour commitments but the last few years have been very enjoyable,” Green admitted.

“I think it’s fascinating that we have both done it and I hope this tournament format kicks off some interest around the world.”
