Rising Edberg putts to lead

Little-known Swede Pelle Edberg carded a second round five-under-65 to take the lead at the European Open in Dublin while Australian Richard Green is four-strokes off the pace. Edberg, known more for his headbands than his golfing ability, turned professional 10 years ago, but then made seven trips to the European Tour qualifying school before making a success of it. The 28-year-old has never finished higher than ninth in any Tour event, but he was 19th in last week&aposs French Open as he started to announce his presence on the European scene. An opening 67 did not draw particular attention to him though, but two putts of over 20 metres in a 65 set a stiff target for the rest of the field. “When you start making money you feel a bit more comfortable out here,” he said. “You play your game more than keep looking at what everybody else is doing.” “If I can just get a decent weekend I will definitely secure my card for next year, which is a very big thing.” Scotsman Colin Montgomerie almost stole Edberg&aposs thunder, carding a six-under 64 to be one-stroke behind the Swede, level on seven-under overall with Edberg&aposs in-form compatriot Niclas Fasth (68). After carding a competitive 69 in the first round, Australian Green upped his game during the second round at Carnoustie as he returned a three-under-67 score to be just four shots behind Edberg at four-under overall. Behind Green, the next best Australiasian was New Zealand&aposs Michael Campbell (71) who carded a one-over 71 on his second day to slip back to one-under overall, one stroke ahead of Peter O&aposMalley (68) who finished the day on even-par alongside Terry Price (69) and one-stroke ahead of Peter Fowler (71). However, there were several Australians who missed the cut at Carnoustie including Brett Rumford, Matthew Zions and Andrew Tampion.
