Riverside Golf Club in Launceston, Tasmania is Paris bound after its team won the 2009 Peugeot Women’s Classic National Final. After making their way through the club event and the State Final, Marise Kearney, Nicole Keeffe and Margaret Ashdown combined to defeat the finalists from the five remaining states at the National Final. Played at Commonwealth Golf Club in the lead up to the 2010 Handa Women’s Australian Open, the players contested the Stableford Teams Event in typical Melbourne weather. Fighting off the odd heavy downpour, the women combined for a team score of 75 points, to defeat the girls from the sand greens of Moora Lake View Golf Club from WA by six strokes. The team was absolutely jubilant, and could not hide their excitement. The win will go some way to easing pain of the 2008 Riverside team, who lost last year s National Final by two strokes. The team was presented with their trophy by Wendy Doolan, a long time LPGA Tour player, who in 2003 recorded her second career win after posting four-straight rounds in the 60s at the Welch&aposs/Fry&aposs Championship; her 29 birdies tying an LPGA record for most sub-par holes in a single event. With over 14,000 women having contested the event at over 500 clubs Australia wide, Marise, Nicole and Margaret will now head to Paris for the Peugeot International Pro-am. Golf Australia and Peugeot have had a wonderful partnership over the last four years, and through the Peugeot Women’s Classic, has brought the event to over 50,000 players.
