Ron cracks 100

Updated 20/05/2013 Ron Dixon was approaching a milestone. He is 91 years of age, plays regularly with the Wauchope Vets on Tuesdays and kept a record of how many times he equalled or beat his age. His goal was to beat his age BY his age and the tally of 90 came up early last year. His next goal was to crack 100. That was quite a challenge as an accident meant he lost a great deal of strength from his shoulder and failing eyesight through MD did not help. Ron achieved 99 early this year. In February, the vets had a trophy ready, i.e. a framed photo of the club house and 18th green. But the floods came in March and Ron&aposs health suffered a setback making scoring difficult. It looked as though he was not going to achieve the century, so the Committee presented him with the photo to celebrate his 99th in April. A week later during the first round of the Vet Championships on May 7, Ron shot his age for the 100th time. He shot 91 off the stick and was proudly able to fulfil his ambition…the magic ton! Captain Dennis Hughes informed Ron that if he peeled off the 99 times sticker on the trophy, underneath it was the original 100 times sticker. Ron only took up golf after he retired as a Social Security worker. He is also a WWII vet having served in the Army between 1940-42 in Egypt, Syria and Port Morseby. Ron married Margorie in 1946 and has 11 grandkids, 13 great grandchildren and one more on the way. Ron first shot his age on his 75th birthday when he shot a 74 off the stick. In his cheeky demeanour, Ron said, “All the boys made such a fuss of it I decided to keep a record!” In 2003 President at the time, John Hill presented him with a certificate recognising his achievement between July 1996 and July 2003 when he had equalled or bettered his age 31 times. John asked him once what was his secret?…”Never had a lesson in my life!” was his reply. He lives happily in Wauchope and still plays regularly with the Vets on Tuesdays. A modest and popular character with a dry sense of humour, Ron is an inspiration to us all and is keen to continue enjoying his golf. His next goal? To play in a group with his son, grandson and great grandson!
