Rookies take on the Dunes

There was yet another bumper field for today’s Stuart Appleby Rookie Series event on the magnificent Cups course at the Dunes Golf Links. 48 players made the trek to the Mornington Peninsula for the second last instalment of the series for 2016.

Going out in today’s first group, primary school SSV team member Aaron Tran captured the U16 boys title in the gusty conditions. The 12-year-old veteran started strong but made three consecutive bogies on 7,8 and 9 to return a score of 38, one shot better than George Carasavidis. Sonny Distanislo took home the handicap prize with a score of 30 this afternoon.

Alexandra Kerr booked herself a place in the January final after carding a round of 41 for top spot in the U16 girls. After winning the title at Sanctuary Lakes, Jeneath Wong finished three shots back for the runner-up position. Sophie Miles captured the best nett with 28 from her 18 handicap.

Ben Powell was too strong in the U11 boys section with a stellar round of 34 for victory. Harrison Gomez also had an impressive score of 35 for today’s round. Anthony Arce edged out Phoenix Diaz on a count back for the handicap honours when the pair tied on 24 apiece.

Meanwhile Louise Baliton added yet another medallion to her trophy cabinet in the under 11 girls section with a round of 42. Gracie Larsen walked home victorious in the nett section with a superb round of 29.
