The first round of the Moyne Senior Classic kicked off today with an impressive field at the picturesque Port Fairy Golf Links. Players enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with a nice cool breeze coming off the ocean.
The Moyne Senior Classic is the last event of the year for the men and first for the women on the respective 2017 Men’s and 2018 Women’s Senior Order of Merit calendars.
Kym Olsen (The National GC) and Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath GC) went head to head today in a contest that will decide the winner of the 2017 Doug Bachli trophy. Olsen came into this tournament as the number one ranked player by a mere 10 points over Claney. Claney has made the better start after shooting 72 in round 1 which puts him at the top of the leaderboard through 18 holes. Olsen was unable to repeat his stellar form at Warrnambool where he blitzed the field with 6-under for the tournament, finishing with 78 today.
Henk Van De Ven (Howlong GC) played off a daily handicap of 9 and finished with nett 69 to sit atop the nett leaderboard through round 1. He will be looking to stay ahead of the pack tomorrow as 5 players trail closely behind after first rounds of nett 71. Keith Finkelde and Ignatius Duivenvoorden have one last chance tomorrow to chase down John Kelly in the Paul Lulofs Trophy.
In the women’s scratch competition, Sue Dawes (Yarrawonga Mulwala GC) returned to form and finished with 34 scratch points to hold the round 1 lead. She appears to be set for an exciting contest with Helen Pascoe (Buninyong GC) tomorrow who recorded 30 scratch points today.
Sue Dawes is also leading the women’s stableford trophy after shooting 37 points off a daily handicap of 2 today. There are 4 players sitting 2 points back and plenty more within reach of claiming the overall stableford trophy.
The 2017 Senior Order of Merit trophies will be presented for the women tonight at the Tournament dinner before round 2 tomorrow morning at 8:30am.
