It was a picture-perfect afternoon at Warrnambool Golf Club today for round one of the 2016 Norton Motor Group Warrnambool Senior Amateur.
73 players took to the course in brilliant sunshine and a mild breeze which was a pleasant contrast from the strong winds that usually gust along on the Shipwreck Coast. While conditions were ideal for low scoring, most players found the undulating course a challenge which was reflected in the cards returned.
This is the final event on the Women’s Senior Order of Merit Calendar with players vying for the end of season trophies to be presented at the Moyne Senior Classic on Friday at Port Fairy Golf Club. Helen Pascoe of Buninyong is currently leading the Scratch Senior Order of Merit and recorded the best score of 26 scratch points today. Following closely a mere 2 points back is local member Di Robinson on 24 points.
Vicki Johnstone made the most of her local knowledge today to come in with the best stableford score of 32 points. Johnstone is sitting 2 shots clear of Robinson, Sharyn Wilson (Yarrawonga Mulwala) and Bev Smith (Hepburn Springs).
Greg O’Brien is leading the men’s field with a score of 3 over par 75. The Commercial Albury member is 3 strokes clear of Gary House from Sanctuary Lakes. Jeff Hasthorpe (Trafalgar) and David Robb (Thurgoona) are a further shot back and round up the only players to record a sub-80 gross score.
O’Brien also sits on top the men’s nett leaderboard. The 4 marker carded a nett 71 to finish one shot ahead of House. A trio of players are another stroke behind on nett 73 and will be looking to chase the leaders tomorrow.
Warrnambool will be hosting a dinner at the club tonight before the second and final round starting at 8:30am tomorrow morning.
