Melbourne’s Gabi Ruffels turned in another sound performance today to climb into contention in the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in Vancouver.
Ruffels, coming off a stellar start to her college career for USC and a recent runner-up finish at the North And South Amateur at Pinehurst, fired a fine one-under-par 70 at Marine Drive Golf Club to sit at one under at the halfway mark, just six shots adrift of three American sharing the lead.
The 18-year-old, who secured the winning point for Victoria in the 2017 Interstate Series final in Perth, made 18 straight pars in round one, then was actually three under today before a couple of late bogeys.
But with a penchant for low scores and a growing confidence in her abilities, Ruffels is still well placed to make a run at one of the oldest titles in women’s golf.
Sydney’s Doey Choi is the next best Aussie at three over after a couple of late bogeys consigned her to a 74, while Brisbane’s Dee Dee Russell suffered the same fate in a 75 that left her at five over.
Sydney’s Amy Chu, the winning captain of this year’s Interstate Series in Adelaide, seemed in danger of missing the cut when she took an early double-bogey in her second round after an opening 76, but bounced back well with a string of birdies to card a 72 and easily progress at six over.
