West Australian Curtis Luck was able to contend with strong afternoon winds to successfully defend his Smarter Than Smoking State Junior Amateur title at Wanneroo Golf Club.
State player Luck shot a tournament low 4 under par 68 in the morning followed by a 1 under the card round in the afternoon for a total 139, three clear of fellow state player Jarryd Felton (Gosnells Golf Club).
Victorian and National squad member Lucas Herbert finished in third place at 1 under par, one stroke behind Felton.
Fellow Victorian and National Squad member Ryan Ruffels who won the WA Boys Sub Junior Championship finishing on 3 over par 147, one shot clear of Royal Fremantle Golf Club’s Minwoo Lee.
In the Girls Championship, Queensland’s Amy Walsh fired a tournament low 2 under par 71 in the afternoon to hoist the Smarter Than Smoking State Junior Girls trophy at Wanneroo Golf Club.
The Emerald Lakes Golf Club member struggled in the morning and had a couple early bogies in the afternoon, but found four birdies down the stretch to finish at 3 over par overall. Walsh, who was recently selected to compete at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF), had rounds of 78, 71 (149).
Last year’s winner and Australian number 5 junior Hannah Green of Mount Lawley Golf Club had rounds of 77, 76 (153) to finish four shots back.
One shot further back was Victorian Montana Strauss who had consistent rounds of 77, 77 (154) to finish at 8 over the card.
In the Girls Sub Junior Championship, Mount Lawley Golf Club’s Claudia Pisano finished atop the leaderboard with rounds of 75, 82 (157).
