Russell, Strauss shine again in UK

Another day, another great performance in the United Kingdom by Australia’s young female golfers.

Rising Victorian Montana Strauss and Queenslander Dee Dee Russell shared second place in the annual Astor Salver at The Berkshire in southern England.

Just days after finishing just one off the pace at the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews, Strauss was again exemplary, carding rounds of 73-71 to finish one under across the club’s Blue and Red courses.

Even more impressive was that the National Golf Club member was three over early in her first round before fighting back into contention.

Russell, a member at The Brisbane Golf Club and herself T15 at St Andrews, had a magnificent eagle in each of her rounds today, and signed for a pair of 72s to join her countrywoman.

Both finished five shots behind England’s Lily Humphreys who had been solid rather than spectacular until she unleashed her ultimately victorious charge.

The Essex golfer peeled off five consecutive birdies on the inward nine in the second round to fend off the Aussie charge.

Gennai Goodwin, of Indooroopilly, carded rounds of 75-76 to finish T18 at six over, while fellow Queenslander Becky Kay endured a rollecoaster closing nine holes of an eagle, two birdies, a bogey and three doubles as her challenge faded into a 73-79 result and T21 at seven over.
