The 2016 South Australian Aboriginal Golf Championship was held at the North Adelaide Golf Course over 18 holes on Friday 29 April.
51 Aboriginal amateur golfers participated on the day with those who are members of Clubs affiliated with GOLF SA and who hold a current Golf Australia handicap eligible for the Championship.
A 9 and 18 hole participation event was also held for the casual golfer which also incorporated junior players. Issac Ah Chee fired a 53 on the short 9 hole junior course while his brother Noah posted a 55.
In the Men’s Championship Bert Pearce off a handicap of nine from Kapunda Golf Club took out the title (GA handicap limit 18) with a gross score of 82, while Senior Men’s Champion was Robert Alldritt (handicap 9) who fired a round of 87.
Division 2 Men’s Champion (GA Handicap range 19-36) was Warren Saunders (handicap of 21) from North Adelaide GC with a gross score 95.
Nerida Saunders from North Adelaide Golf (Handicap 23) claimed the Ladies Championship (her fourth title) winning in a playoff against Glennis Warrior (Handicap 23) from Kapunda GC.
Both players carded rounds of 114, but Saunders proved too strong winning on the second playoff hole.
All players had a great time and much of that credit goes to the sponsors and organisers of the event including the Office for Sport and Recreation, Australian Electoral Commission, Housing SA, SA Health Commission and the Adelaide City Council.
At the presentations the inaugural South Australian Aboriginal Social Golf Club was formed with Trevor Buzzacott elected its inaugural Chair.
The Club supported by Golf SA, aims to play approximately 7 organised events per year in the metropolitan area as well as on the west and east coast of SA, with the aim of converting social golfers to regular players who obtain an official golf Australia handicap.
