SA Mid-Amateur Champions Susan Keylock and Mark Boulton

Susan Keylock from Sand Creek Golf Club and Mark Boulton from the Philip Island Golf Club have claimed the 2016 Women’s and Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

The event in its fifth year, played at the Links Lady Bay Golf Course over 36 holes, attracted a strong field of 62 men and 6 women.

Conditions were breezy in the opening round, which challenged all players to post a low score.

There was a three-way lead in the Men’s Championship after the opening 18 holes, with Boulton, Patrick Mentzel (The National) and James Coulson (Flagstaff Hill) all sharing the lead, after posting two-over rounds of 74.

In the Women’s Championship, Sandy Creek member Susan Keylock (88), lead Deb Percey (93) in the Women’s Championship after 18 holes.

The sun was shining on day two with conditions well suited to low scoring.

In the Men's, Coulson jumped out of the blocks through the opening nine holes firing two birdies to move to even par and lead Mentzel by four strokes and Boulton by five.

Coulson was cruising to victory and was still even with the card and six ahead of Mentzel and Boulton, until the par-3 15th hole.

Coulson would make bogey and then follow with two triple.

When the players stood on the 18th tee, Boulton now held a one stroke lead over Coulson, after making seven pars in a row. Mentzel was seven back and out of contention.

Cool under pressure until the very end, 43-year old Boulton made par on the final hole to finish 6-over (74-76) two ahead of Coulson to claim a second straight SA Mid-Amateur Championship.

Mark Hopf from Flagstaff Hill finished third (79,76), while best nett was Links Lady Bay’s Wayne Thornborrow (nett 72,72)

Susan Keylock was crowned the SA Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion with rounds of (88,86) to finish 13 strokes ahead of West Lakes, Younghwa Kim (100, 87).

After 18 holes, Keylock a former Golf SA Board Member, held a five stroke lead over 2015 champion Deb Percey and then cruised to victory with another solid round in round two.

Best Nett Winner was Lesley Monfort from Tanunda Pines Golf Club with scores of Nett 171 (91,80)
