Sacred Heart Gets a Taste of MyGolf

A Hobart primary school in the leafy inner suburb of New Town is successfully offering golf through the MyGolf Sporting Schools Program.

Sacred Heart College students from prep to grade six are being treated to after-school sessions covering all skills in a variety of challenging games and activities.

“The program’s focus is on repetition, high engagement and learning the skills through playing fun games,” said Golf Tasmania’s Development Officer, Simon Weston.

“Each session has a key learning intention and is aligned to a national curriculum,” said Weston.

The $100 million Australian Sports Commission program has been running nationally since July last year and is aimed at getting more kids playing sport in schools.

“The MyGolf Sporting Schools Program has been a big success with a large number of participants from 6-12 years-of-age,” said Paul Guinane, Sacred Heart College’s Primary Sports Coordinator.

“It has been really engaging for all ages and abilities through well planned sessions and excellent equipment.”

Tasmanian women’s team member, Georgia Milbourne, is delivering the seven week school based sessions which were developed in consultation with teachers.

Milbourne, who is accredited under the program, instructs 43 students each Wednesday from 3.15-4.15pm in all aspects of the game including full swing, chipping and putting.

“I enjoy seeing the participants have fun whilst improving their skills each week,” said the 17-year-old St Marys College student.

“I also really enjoy being able to help grow the game of golf around Tasmania,” said Milbourne.
