final of the 2014 Australian Men’s Senior Match Play Championship at Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club began in perfect conditions for golf between Barry Tippett from Victoria and Brian Sams from New South Wales.
Tippet took the early lead going 2up though 4, while the wind once again picked up which has been a constant throughout the championship.
Brian Sams fought back to lead the match 1up through 8, however Tippett once again rallied to win holes 11, 12 and 14 to regain the lead and move to 2up.
The finals holes were a see-sawing event with the lead changing once again, however it came down to the 18th hole with Sams requiring a 14ft putt to take the championship. Unfortunately the putt missed right so Tippett lived to fight another hole and the match headed down the par 5 19th (1st hole West Course).
After putting himself dead behind a tree on his second shot, Tippett was on the back foot, which eventually cost him the match with Sams playing the hole in text book fashion and eventually dropping a 4ft putt for par to take the championship on the 19th.
