Sandringham Golf Course is the latest club to sign on as a Special Olympics MyGolf Centre conducting clinics and course access for kids with intellectual disability.
It’s one of three programs in the south east of Melbourne including Sandhurst Club and Pakenham G.C to be a part of the initiative developed by Golf Victoria in conjunction with Special Olympics.
The program offers participants a great pathway to casual golf course access and for athletes training and working towards the Special Olympics National Games in 2018.
The Special Olympics Program will run in conjunction with school terms offering weekly group tuition by Sandringham Golf Course teaching professional Brendan Green.
Brendan is active at local primary schools and coaches junior MyGolf clinics at both Royal Melbourne and Sandringham. Brendan also offers a range of beginner clinics at Sandringham with a strong focus on developing pathways for all into the game of golf.
“The Special Olympics MyGolf Program is another offering we have to ensure that everyone in our community will have access to our venue” Brendan added.
Golf Victoria Inclusion Manager Christian Hamilton was praising Sandringham Golf Course’s attitude toward the program.
“Brendan is a passionate PGA member, looking to provide opportunities for everyone to play golf and his offering of programs really reflect that.”
“To also have a management team that share the same enthusiasm is the perfect combination in making your facility accessible, friendly and welcoming.” Christian said.
MyGolf is Australia’s National Participation program, a joint venture between Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia and is universally designed to include kids with disability.
“MyGolf is inclusive as kids can participate in clinics at their own pace, with each activity adaptable to suit the level of the participant.” Christian added.
Coaches running the Special Olympics MyGolf program in Victoria also have an additional accreditation with Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia in blind and disabled golf coaching.
The accreditation developed in early 2016 has a strong focus on the coach and facility, ensuring both the facility and coaching programs offered are accessible for people with physical or intellectual disability.
Registrations for the Special Olympics MyGolf program are now open.
