Scores sizzle at Spring Valley

The 2015 edition of the Melbourne Senior Classic got underway this afternoon with 63 players teeing it up at Spring Valley GC in the penultimate event of the 2015 Doug Bachli calendar. The field faced testing conditions, with the mercury reaching a high of 34 degrees during play ensuring the par 71 layout played firm and fast for the duration of the afternoon.

Returning the best nett score of round one was Jim Maher (Howlong) who produced a blistering score of nett 69 from a daily handicap of six. Maher will take a slim one shot advantage into the final round over gross championship leader Ken O’Brien (Rossdale) & Peninsula – Kingswood’s Peter Takle who both recorded first round nett scores of 70.

As mentioned, O’Brien leads the gross championship after recording a solid round of 73. The Rossdale local will be hoping for another consistent round tomorrow morning, to assist in maintaining the one stroke advantage he currently holds over Portsea’s Alan Bullas who fired a first round of 74. Nett leader Maher is holding down third place after a round of 75 closely followed by The National’s Guy Krall on 76.

The final round is shaping up to be an exciting finish in both the gross and nett championships, with play due to commence tomorrow morning at Woodlands GC via a multi tee start.
