Scott claims title

Adam Scott has produced a sensational final round of six-under-par 66 to clinch a three-stroke victory over compatriot Stuart Appleby and American Bubba Watson at the Houston Open. After starting the final round trailing overnight leader Watson by three strokes, Scott made three birdies at the first five holes to join the American in the lead at 14-under-par. When Watson bogeyed the fifth Scott gained the outright lead, and another birdie by the Queenslander at the seventh hole gave him a two-shot cushion over Watson. Appleby made four consecutive birdies on the front nine to join Scott in the lead at 15-under-par, but two bogeys on the back nine, including a three-putt on the 16th green gave the ascendancy to Scott. After Appleby got within one stroke after a birdie on the 17th, Scott found the water with his tee shot on the final hole, while Appleby drove into a bunker, giving the Victorian a chance of claiming his third Houston Open. However, Appleby&aposs approach shot went left and found the water and Scott recovered well finding the back of the green with his third, before draining a 48-foot par putt to clinch his fifth USPGA career victory. Appleby missed his bogey putt, but held on to finish in equal second place at 14-under-par with Watson, while Tommy Armour finished fourth at 13-under-par. Stephen Leaney (70) finished the tournament in equal 19th position at eight-under-par, while fellow Australian John Senden (68) was tied for 31st at five-under-par.
