Scott wins Texas shootout

Adam Scott has nailed a stunning 48-foot birdie putt to secure a sudden-death playoff victory at the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas. Australian Scott, who led the tournament into the final round, birdied the 72nd hole to force a playoff with American Ryan Moore. The first hole of the playoff was shared when both players hit the green in two and then two-putted. It was a similar story at the second attempt to separate them but Scott rolled in a monster putt to make it third time lucky. His approach shot, from a fairway bunker on what became the deciding hole, pitched at the front of the green and settled after Moore landed his second shot at the back fringe of the green, much closer than the Australian. Scott stepped up and made the pressure putt before watching Moore push his chance of survival narrowly wide. The win makes it six US PGA Tour titles for Scott and injects $1.152 million dollars into his season earnings. “I dug it out of nowhere,” Scott said. “I found my range on the third play-off hole. I had been getting it too close before.” “I got away with one today I think.” The world No.10 earlier fired a final-round one-over-par 71 while Moore closed with a three-under-par 71 as both finished on 273 for the four rounds. Scott opened three shots clear of the chasing pack but gave one stroke back with bogey at the 1st before a double-bogey five at the 5th. A birdie at the 7th steadied things somewhat before a run of seven pars was ended with another bogey at the 15th. However, with the title slipping from his grasp and Moore full of confidence, Scott stood tall to birdie the 16th and his prized putting delivered again at the 18th. American Bart Bryant (72) was third on 277, while Scott&aposs countryman Mark Hensby (69) was equal fourth, five shots off the leaders. Nick Flanagan signed for a 69 on the final day to be the next best of the Australian contingent in a tied for 19th.
