John Senden moved into the halfway lead at the Buick Open as Tiger Woods charged into contention thanks to a second-round 63 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Following an opening one-under-par round of 71 which left him eight shots adrift of first-round leader Steve Lowery, world No.1 Woods had said he would need to shoot a low score if he was to have any hope of winning at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club for the third time in his career. He got it. An early-starting Woods came up with the goods as he opened from the 10th tee with four birdies and an eagle, at the par four 12th, over his first five holes. Four more birdies followed, only a bogey five at the 18th, his ninth of the day, spoiling a scorecard that returned a nine-under-par round, taking him to 10-under for the tournament. “I felt like I rolled it just a bit like I did yesterday,” Woods said. “The only difference is I took advantage of the position I was driving in.” The American said he had foregone a routine post-round trip to the practice range on Thursday because he had been disappointed with his opening 71. “I was a little bit hot yesterday, so I decided to just go home and get away from it for a little bit,” he said. “And came out today with a better understanding of what I was going to do and just hit the ball.” “I drove it great yesterday. Just didn&apost hit my irons as close and didn&apost putt well, so I was just going to drive it just as good today and hit my irons a bit better and see if I can pour some in.” Woods&apos 63 put him in a tie for fifth place, four shots back on Australian Senden, whose 66 left him at 14-under, two shots clear of American Michael Letzig, at 12-under following a 65. Senden said he was grateful he saved par at his final hole, the par-four ninth. “It was a good momentum thing for tomorrow,” the Australian said. “It always gives you confidence when you can finish off a round nicely. It makes the whole feeling of the day complete.” “You know, I played solid. I didn&apost have any bogeys, and getting a little awkward lie on the 9th hole and having to chip out pretty much and then nice up-and-down was a good momentum boost for scoring going into tomorrow.” Vaughn Taylor&aposs 68 moved him to 11-under in a tie for third with Bill Lunde (65), while 64s from Roland Thatcher and Jimmy Walker got them to 10-under alongside Woods, Kevin Stadler, Korea&aposs YE Yang and Australian Greg Chalmers. James Nitties is a further stroke back at nine-under, while Marc Leishman, Stuart Appleby and Matt Jones also find themselves in a strong position heading into the weekend. Lowery, whose opening 63 had given him the overnight lead, birdied his opening hole but slumped to a three-over 75 to fall to six-under and a tie for 36th place. England&aposs Greg Owen shot a 69 to move to seven-under for the week at the halfway stage. Owen will be the only European playing the weekend after Martin Laird of Scotland and Swedish duo Daniel Chopra and Fredrik Jacobson all found themselves on the wrong side of the cut line at four-under. Laird missed out by a shot after a second-round 70, while Jacobson&aposs 73 left him at two-under and Chopra carded a 73 to finish at even-par for the week. No-one&aposs round was as difficult as John Daly&aposs however. The American former Open and US PGA champion shot a second-round 88 which started with birdies at the 10th and 13th holes before unravelling with two bogeys, two double bogeys, a triple, a quadruple and quintuple-bogey 10 at the par-five first. Meanwhile, Matthew Millar is the leading Australian at the Czech Open, four strokes behind Englishmen Graeme Storm and Steve Webster.
