Rory McIlroy might not have started the FedEx Cup Playoffs all that well last week in New York but today he added a second consecutive round of 65 at the Deutsche Bank Championship and when play drew to a close on day two, the 23 year old was one ahead of South African Louis Oosthuizen and two ahead of Ryan Moore and Tiger Woods. McIlroy raced through his opening nine in 30 on day two and at that point it appeared as if a really low number was a possibility. When he birdied his 10th hole that appeared even more likely but consecutive bogeys at his 11th and 12th holes slowed the momentum. McIlroy immediately bounced back with consecutive birdies and while he could not progress any further he had done enough to gain the second round lead. McIlroy was followed every step of the way by his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki who earlier in the week had been defeated in the opening round of the US Open in New York. It’s nice to see her out here, said McIlroy. “I think everyone would still love her to be in New York, but unfortunately that isn t the case. But it s nice. It’s great to have her support out here, and obviously when she’s not here, she’s trying to follow as much as she can and watch as much as she can. I m happy she’s here. Hopefully she’s enjoying it a little bit, too. McIlroy referred to the simplicity of his game and the need for only minor corrections if something is wrong. Anything that does go wrong is usually something very, very basic, very simple, and the same with my putting. If I need to work on something, I ll do a couple sessions with Dave Stockton, and I did that and I didn t feel like I putted particularly well at the Open, at Lytham, and spent a few days with Dave at Akron. He was there at the PGA, as well, and it seemed to help. Yeah, I mean, usually when my game goes off, there s not much wrong with it, I hope. After several indifferent performances following his near miss at Augusta National, Oosthuizen is again playing near the level he was when runner-up at the Masters, winning in Malaysia and finishing third in Houston. He will be a very tough customer over the final 36 holes in this event having come off two top five finishes in his last three starts. Woods is threatening danger however. The former winner and twice runner-up in the event started and finished his round well but was not totally convinced with his effort despite being just two behind the world number one. Well, I m happy with the way I hit it, said Woods. I didn t putt very good. I didn t really make anything. Hopefully tomorrow will be a lot better. John Senden leads the Australians in 12th position and five shots from McIlroy s lead. Greg Chalmers is two further back, Adam Scott one further back again, Geoff Ogilvy and Jason Day are 38th, Aaron Baddeley 53rd and Marc Leishman 60th. Both Day and Baddeley have work to do over the final 36 holes if they are to advance to the top 70 of the FedEx Cup who play next week s BMW Championship. Click for LIVE SCORES
