Senden into contention at Masters

Queensland&aposs John Senden accelerated into contention at the Masters Tournament with an electric run of six birdies in 11 holes which moved him to within one stroke of leader Bubba Watson on Friday at Augusta National. The birdie burst propelled Senden to equal the best round of the week so far with 68. He sits one ahead of defending champion Adam Scott who is tied in third place. Senden, The Valspar Championship winner, made early bogeys on the first and fourth holes but fought back strongly, making birdies at the fifth, seventh, eighth, 11th, 14th and 15th. “If I keep believing in myself and enjoying it, that&aposs the difference…it&aposs about keeping a smile on your face when you&aposre under pressure,” Senden told reporters after ending another sun-filled day in Georgia. “There are plenty of ups and downs on this golf course. I just want to go out there and do my best and hope that&aposs good enough.” Senden, who won at Tampa Bay in March, missed the cut in three of his four previous appearances at the opening major of the year but said he had learned a lot from his experiences. “I&aposve been here five times now and learned where to go and where not to go,” said the 42-year-old. “You just have to accept where the ball ends up and play the best shot you can. The secret of this course is keeping the big numbers off the card.” Oliver Goss will be the championship&aposs leading amateur as the only amateur to survive the cut after a superb 1-under par 71 on Friday. Steven Bowditch and Jason Day also made the cut. Matt Jones and Marc Leishman both missed the 36 hole mark.
