Senden pipped in US

John Senden has hit a superb final-round five-under 66 to finish equal second at the PODS Championship in Bermuda, with the Aussie golfer pipped at the line by Mark Calcavecchia, who won the tournament by a stroke with an overall 10-under-par score. Calcavecchia endured a tumultuous final day as he hit a one-under 70 on the par 71 course, with Senden racing up the leaderboard and Heath Slocum almost forcing a play-off at the final hole. With Calcavecchia sitting on a one-stroke lead, Slocum (71) needed to sink a four-foot putt on the final hole to force a playoff, but when the American&aposs effort rebounded off the edge of the cup, Calcavecchia could tip his cap and take victory. “I never expected him to miss that,” said Calcavecchia. For Senden, it was a superb finish as the Aussie started the day on four-under before proceeding to gradually work his way up the leaderboard throughout the round, which included seven birdies. It was the Queenslander&aposs best finish on the US Tour since he won the John Deere Classic last year. “I&aposve been striking the ball all week,” Senden said. “At the beginning of the week I wasn&apost getting it overly close to the hole but today I hit it pretty close. Five of the seven birdies were from inside eight feet (2.5 metres).” “I figured I needed to get it to double figures to have a chance, but I&aposm still happy to shoot the score I did.” The entire tournament was a rollercoaster ride for Calcavecchia though, with the American packing his bags and preparing to leave Innisbrooke following a disastrous first round 75. He rallied slightly on the second day to be on par going into the third round, before producing a sensational 62 to take the lead going into the final day. Calcavecchia struggled to maintain his third-round form on the final day and, with Senden finishing rapidly and Slocum just a shot behind, the American missed a seven-foot par putt on the final hole to expose himself to a playoff before Slocum eventually faltered. Aussies Nathan Green and second-round leader Stephen Leaney also had solid days with both players hitting 70, while Peter Lonard produced a quality 68 to climb into equal 48th.
