Day two at the Senior Interstate Series was action packed. The women played in two hard-fought contests while the men found themselves worlds apart between morning and afternoon sessions.
The men had their backs against the wall in this morning’s clash with NSW at Huntingdale. While Ben Eccles and Frazer Droop excelled to take home big wins (7&6 and 6&5 respectively) the rest of the Vic team found themselves caught behind. Brett Coletta overcame his early 3-hole deficit to halve his match and then Lucas Herbert came home strong from behind to win his match 1-up. It was a scramble near the finish but the Vics remained undefeated looking ahead to their round 4 match against Northern Territory.
The Victorians spent the afternoon much more comfortably than the morning, toppling NT 7-0. Captain Ben Eccles came from behind to finish 2-up while Zach Murray’s replacement, Andrew Shonewille put in a solid performance winning 5&4.
At Royal Melbourne, the stage was set for an exciting match-up between the Victorian women and Queensland in the morning and the results went down to the wire. Vics got over the line 3-2 with two wins, two halves and one loss. Julienne Soo continued her red hot form finishing with a 2&1 win which was replicated by Captain Jo Charlton playing at number 2.
The win gave the women’s team much needed confidence as they set up for the highly anticipated, top of the leader board clash with WA in the afternoon. Julienne Soo looked shaky early, dropping 3 holes behind but crafted a staggering 5 birdies in a row and went on to pinch the game 2&1. Jo Charlton continued her consistent form with a 2&1 win, likewise Grace Daniell who finished 3&2. Bianca Ling put on a show with a 6&5 victory, while Olivia Kline was unlucky to drop her match by just one hole.
The women finished up with a 4-1 victory over last year’s champs, sending them to the top spot of the leader board. They are in prime position to make the final.
