A strong field of 77 senior golfers converged on Keysborough GC for the annual 18-Hole Senior Amateur, the first senior event of the 2017 calendar year. A pleasant summer morning developed into a hot afternoon on course, with gusty winds sweeping across the par 73 layout ensuring a stern test for the field.
The course was presented in superb condition which is a testament to the efforts by the ground staff and fleet of local course maintenance volunteers. John Owen (Barwon Heads) took out the inaugural senior title of 2017, with a fine score of 74 (one over par) which was good enough for a one-shot win.
In second place, for the second year running, was local Robert Harvie after a round of 75. Harvie finished in the runner-up position via way of countback from current Australian Senior Amateur Champion Kym Olsen & current Paul Lulofs Champion Ken O’Brien (Rossdale).
In the nett championship, Peter Buff (Yering Meadows) emerged the victor with a solid score of 71 nett from a daily handicap of eight. Buff took the nett title by way of countback from Queensland visitor Stuart Jarrett (Maryborough) who recorded a nett round of 71 from a daily handicap of seven.
The next event on the Victorian Senior Order of Merit schedule is the 54-hole Royal Melbourne Seniors Classic starting next Monday 16 January.
