Greg Norman On October 11, Greg Norman will be officially recognised as a Legend in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. The Shark will be accompanied on the red carpet by Chris Evert and will receive this prestigious award in front of his peers at Melbourne&aposs Crown Entertainment Complex in sport&aposs nights of nights. Labelled the “Great White Shark”, Greg Norman held the number one world ranking for 331 weeks. After six seasons of European campaigning, he finished 1982 as the PGA European Tour&aposs top-rated player. In 1983 he won the Australian Masters, Hong Kong Open and World Match Play Championship. In 1984 he won the Australian Masters, Victoria Open, Kemper Open, Canadian Open and Australian PGA, and was ranked ninth in the American Order of Merit placings. Early in 1985 Norman won the new Australian Skins Game from Severiano Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. In 1986 he established himself as the best golfer in the world and the most successful Australian professional ever to play the game. His success in 1986 was phenomenal, winning the British Open, the World Match Play title, the Dunhill Cup (a team event) and finished second in the USA Masters. He won six events in a row – a feat that at the time was only second to Byron Nelson&aposs record of 11 consecutive victories achieved in 1945. Norman won the British Open again in 1993, and in 1994 won the Players Championship in record-setting fashion (averaging 68.81 per round for the year). The Sports Australia Hall Of Fame represents 200 years of Australian sport and was started 25 years ago with Sir Donald Bradman being the original inductee. Since then, over 400 sporting icons have been inducted across all sports including all Olympic disciplines. Members include Rod Laver, Dawn Fraser, Ron Barassi, John Eales and many more. This year, Steve Waugh, Mike McKay, Louise Savage and Petria Thomas will join the illustrious group in addition to Norman&aposs elevation to &aposLegend&apos status.
