Sharon Nott rules the Sand Greens

Dunedoo&aposs Sharon Nott has walked away for the fourth time as the Women’s NSW Sand Greens Champion. The 2012 Championship was held at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club from Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 October. Of the four championships Sharon participated in, she won in 2007, 2011 and 2012 as the Division 1 36 hole scratch winner. In 2008 she was a joint winner with Sue Brooks from Lithgow. It was a close match against runner-up Kylie McDougal. It came down to the last hole when Kylie sprayed right into a hazard handing Sharon a one shot lead. Sharon said, It was a good tussle…..with golf every shot is a surprise. The Cobar course features some tricky water hazards and plenty of opportunities to run into trouble, but it repays accuracy and good placement. The course was in very good condition which resulted in some fine scores. It isn t just the event that lures Sharon back it s the friendship, the dinners on Saturday night to have a yarn and catch up with people . The Women&aposs NSW Sand Greens Championship is a wonderful opportunity for players from all over NSW to come together, meet up with friends, socialise, and enjoy the opportunity to play in a state event. Over 100 players attended this year s event. Numerous players have already booked their accommodation for the 2013 Women&aposs NSW Sand Greens Championship to be held at Hay Golf Club on 19-20 October. Home grown knowledge helped with Cobar players winning the majority of places. Hay s Kylie McDougal is hoping for the advantage next year. She wants a second chance to compete against Sharon on her home course, after coming so close to winning and missing out on the final hole this year. The event was a great success due to the work of an efficient, pleasant and helpful team from the Western Districts Committee, with great assistance from the Cobar Committee. What impressed Sharon was the generosity shown by the Cobar Members for the ladies to use the golf carts free of charge. Cobar Golf Club provided a warm welcome to players, who especially appreciated the help from the men who acted as spotters on course to track the balls and supported the event. The weather for the two days of play was generally fine, with temperatures in the mid to low 30s. To everyone s relief, a storm which threatened on Sunday brought nothing but some dark clouds and an occasional sprinkling of rain. All players appreciated the provision of cold water at the turn courtesy of Golf NSW and Cobar Golf Club. As a player who has conquered the most Sand Greens Championships, Sharon s tip is to learn how to chip and run the ball from 30 metres out ..go down and be part of it experience it you won t be disappointed!
