Sherratt to stay on in India for exhibition match

courtesy European Golf Association Despite the cancellation of the the biennial Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy this week in India, South Australian Jordan Sherratt will stay on in Bangalore to compete in an exhibition match with the players who also successfully made the trip. Caused bye air traffic closures prompted by the Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland, only four players successfully arrived in India from the 12-man European team. Three of those were the Arizona State University teammates Jesper Kennegard (SWE) , Knut Borsheim (NOR) and James Byrne (SCO) who were able to fly westward from Phoenix, Arizona to avoid the ash cloud that has paralysed air transport since last week. Carlos Pigem (ESP) was able to leave Madrid on Saturday via a flight to Moscow before heading south to Delhi and the eventual destination of Bangalore. The other eight European players have been grounded in Europe due to widespread air-traffic closures as their national golf authorities and families spent hours on the telephone trying to rebook flights. The European Golf Association said the enthusiasm of the players and the help they received from their supporting national golfing bodies has done everyone credit. England&aposs Tommy Fleetwood summed up the feelings of the players after the cancellation was first announced: “… really gutted for everyone concerned. Would have done anything possible to have got myself there”. There will be no opportunity to reschedule the match. All of the team members who arrived at the venue (including Sherratt) will play an exhibition match with the four European players present. The European Golf Association would kindly like to thank the players and their member national golf authority members who were involved for their persistence in attempting to bring the match together.
