Jenny Brown from Mornington was victorious at the 2017 Silver Spoon State Final after returning a score of 37 stableford points today at Eastern Golf Club in a hot Melbourne Spring day.

The event commences with Club Qualifying rounds throughout the year, with winners proceeding to the State Final. This year over 170 Victorian affiliated clubs participated with 109 of them attending today’s final. It started out as a warm morning in Melbourne’s outer North-East with the mercury reaching 31 degrees early in the afternoon with little wind that also become a factor for the players.

After starting on the 18th hole, Brown went on to have a wonderful 21 points on the back 9 (19-27), adding 16 more to the total on the home stretch to claim the Burtta Cheney Trophy along with a case of 6 spoons. This score was two better than eventual runner-up Sue Byrne (Trentham) who led the remainder of the field.

Scoring was tough in the afternoon, however Annette Hartley (Moonah Links) managed to come out on top, posting a respectable 35 points, claiming the win in the afternoon field by 4 shots from Maffra’s Jan Robbins on a countback.

Eastern Golf Club, located just off the Eastlink freeway, is to be commended for the manner in which they hosted the State Final. The club’s hospitality and assistance in the lead up to the event is greatly appreciated.
