Sinclair, Huggins, and Wilde in the lead at Cobram

Round 1 for the Victorian Women’s Country Championship and Glenelg Cup was contested in chilly but still conditions today at Cobram-Barooga Golf Club.

116 players competed on the West Course for the Country Championship, with the leading score coming from Alison Sinclair of Warrnambool. Sinclair, a nine marker, posted an 81 on the challenging par 72 layout. Following closely in contention are six players all tied a shot behind on 82, including the 2013 Country Foursomes Champions pair from Wodonga, Catherine Odgers and Casey Wild. Lauren Higgins from Warrnambool off a handicap of 14 shot a lovely 2 under par nett 70 for the best nett score of the day in the Championship field.

In the Glenelg Cup field, Tracie Wilde (Nhill, Hcap 22) and Lesley Huggins (Warragul, Hcap 30) are joint leaders both carding a one under par nett 72. Hot on their tail a shot back are a trio of players, including fellow Warragul members Kylie Golding and Shannon Trumper, and Greta De Hoogd from Beaconhills. Golding also posted the best gross score of the day with a 93 off the stick.

Tonight, players are looking forward to the Tournament Dinner hosted at Sporties which features a carvery meal and a fashion parade by local clothing store Bella’s.  Play will again commence at 7.45am tomorrow morning, with players swapping courses for Round 2.
