Friday 1 December – Final

<image="15" align="left" />

Yarra Yarra’s Dallas & Philip Wickenden have won the 2018 Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy.

The pair defeated Woodlands’ Mike & Kathy Smith on the 19th in a close and exciting final played at the superbly presented Metropolitan Golf Club on Friday 2 November.

The Smiths, playing off a handicap of 9, had to give 4 shots to their opponents.

It was clear early on that this match was destined to go the distance as neither team could gain a significant lead.

On the women’s par 5 9th hole, the Wickendens made an impressive four to take a 1up lead at the turn.

They followed up the effort with another superb four on the tricky 10th hole to extend the lead to two.

The seesawing score line continued until the Wickendens regained a 2up lead at 15 and halved the next to see the match dormie after 16 holes.

The Smiths proved that they weren’t going to go down without a fight and won the 17th to extend the match to the 18th hole.

On the 18th green, staged in front of an array of grandstands for the upcoming World Cup of Golf, the Wickendens had a six foot putt to halve the hole and win the match but watched in disbelief as it lipped out of the cup.

All of a sudden the match was back to square and the final continued on the 19th hole for the second year running.

Dallas Wickenden delivered the decisive blow on the 19th, chipping a lob wedge to one foot and allowing her partner Philip to tap it in for four.

The Smiths came tantalisingly close to matching the effort but just missed their par putt to see a thrilling match come to an end.

Both pairs enjoyed a match played in great spirits and were overly grateful to have played on the stunning Metropolitan layout for the past four days.

The Wickendens look forward to returning next year in a bid to defend their title.

The final eight in the 2018 Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy teed off in the early morning to determine who would progress through to the semi-finals in the afternoon.

Three of the four quarter-finals went the distance and provided some exciting highlights in key moments.

Dallas & Philip Wickenden (Yarra Yarra) continued their hot form from yesterday with another dominant display, defeating low markers Caleb Bovalina & Danika Coyne (Commonwealth) 4/3.

The win set up a semi-final showdown with Jessica Clyde & Anthony Reibel (Commonwealth) who defeated Martin Hirons & Louise Johns (Kingston Heath) on the 19th.

Mike & Kathy Smith (Woodlands) survived a tight tussle with Mark Brasher & Ros Nicol (Kew) by holding strong on the 18th hole to secure a 1up victory.

The final spot in the last four was claimed by Jonathon Cross & Ellen Pollock (Commonwealth) who defeated Heath Bensted (Northern) & Jess Pickwick (Kilmore).

In another match that went down to the wire and looked poised to extend to a 19th hole, Cross sank a 30 foot putt on the 18th to clinch a thrilling 1up victory.

After a quick rest and bite to eat, the remaining eight players headed back on course to fight for a spot in tomorrow morning’s final.

The first pair to book their place in the final were the number 16 qualifiers in Dallas & Philip Wickenden.

The Wickendens endured a close battle with Clyde & Reibel before closing it out on the 17th for a 2/1 victory.

The second semi-final was an even tighter affair and saw the match all tied up after 17 holes.

On the 18th, Mike & Kathy Smith made a superb up and down to make four and ultimately snatch victory from Cross & Pollock.

The final will take place at 8am tomorrow.

Wednesday 29 October – SDB Match-Play (Top 16)

The round of 16 matches for the 2018 Sir Dallas Brooks Trophy were completed this morning in some tight contests at Metropolitan GC.

Dallas & Philip Wickenden (Yarra Yarra) upset the top qualifiers Heidi & Andrew Haringcaspel (Settlers Run & Peninsula-Kingswood) with a 4/3 victory.

Coming up against the Wickendens in the quarterfinals will be the young pairing of Caleb Bovalina & Danika Coyne (Commonwealth) who finally triumphed on the 20th hole in their match against Mark & Laura Griffin (Cardinia-Beaconhills).

Commonwealth duo Jessica Clyde & Anthony Reibel defeated low-markers Emily Smith (Huntingdale) & James Ford (Riversdale) 3/2 to set up a quarterfinal match with Kingston Heath’s Martin Hirons & Louise Johns.

Hirons & Johns overcame Royal Melbourne’s Georgina & Philip Leigh 2/1.

Kew Golf Club’s Mark Brasher & Ros Nicol had a convincing 5/4 victory over Andy Cheng (Spring Valley) & Jane Zhang (Rosanna).

Brasher & Nicol will face Mike & Kathy Smith (Woodlands) in the next stage tomorrow who clinched a tight 2 up victory over Sarah & Gabe Tokolyi (Commonwealth).

Jonathon Cross & Ellen Pollock were the third Commonwealth pairing to advance to the quarterfinals after defeating Darren Cope (Moonah Links) & Susan Semmens (Spring Valley) 4/2.

In the final round of 16 match, Heath Bensted (Northern) & Jess Pickwick (Kilmore) booked a quarterfinal with Cross & Pollock after proving too solid for Kathy Naoumidis (Keysborough) & Paul Fairbanks (Spring Valley) with a 4/3 win.

The quarter finals and semi finals will take place tomorrow starting at 8am with the final played on Friday morning.
