Smith and Park land QLD amateur silverware

Cameron Smith and Jessica Park took out the Queensland Boys&apos and Queensland Girls&apos Amateur titles on Thursday. Smith (Wantima) won the 2009 Queensland Boy s Amateur by a single shot from Maverick Antcliff (Hills International) after a titanic battle that went all the way to the 18th green in Thursday s final round. With both players all square on the 18th tee, Antcliff pushed his drive right into the trees and was forced to chip back out into the fairway, while Smith hit a good drive down the fairway and left his approach on the front fringe of the 18th green. While Antcliff hit a solid short-iron approach to about 8-feet to give himself a good chance of salvaging par, his putt slid by the top side of the cup to give Smith the opportunity to close out the Championship with a par. As head done all week, Smith made no mistake from short distance, closing with a final round 75 to win by one. Ancliff finished with a closing round 4-over par 74. Aaron Wilkin finished alone in third position following a final round two-over par 72. Jessica Park (Indooroopilly) defeated Jacki Marshall (Pacific) 3 & 1 in a closely contested final of the 2009 Queensland Girl s Amateur Championship at Gailes Golf Club. It was Marshall however who held the early advantage in the 36-hole final, holding a two shot lead over Park after the first 18 holes had been completed. The second round was a different story however, with Park having squared the match after 9 holes and going 3-up on Marshall after 14 holes. While Marshall won the 15th to reduce the deficit by one, Park held firm in halving the 16th before closing out the match 3 & 1 by winning the 17th. The victory completed a great week s golf for Park, who on Wednesday accounted for reigning Queensland Women’s Amateur champion Ellie Na 2-up in yesterday s semi-final. text courtesy: Golf Queensland.
